Multiple Sclerosis Flashcards
Define Multiple Sclerosis
Multi factorial, autoimmune inflammatory disease of the CNS
Inflammation leads to degeneration of neuronal sheath surrounding axons in the CNS
What are the 4 stages of MS?
1) Clinically isolated = first episode
2) Relapsing-remitting = symptoms worsen then improve in periods
3) Primary-progressive = steadily worsen between cycles
4) Symptoms get steadily worse, no more relapses
What are some common symptoms of MS
Weakness
Fatigue
Spasticity
Mood
Memory
Visual/ speech problems
Gait/ balance impairments
What is the prognosis for MS?
No cure but medical management can help to control symptoms
Describe the relationship to ICF, psychometric properties and what is measured for the 9 Hole peg test?
Body structure and function
Observe and time how long pt takes to put nine pegs in 9 holes
Measures UL motor control and finger dexterity
Mixed findings for vailidty
Adequate- excellent reliability
Describe the relationship to ICF, psychometric properties and what is measured for the Fatigue Severity Scale
Activity and participation
Measures general health and the effect of fatigue on activities and lifestyle
Adequate to excellent vailidty
Moderate reliability
Describe the relationship to ICF, psychometric properties and what is measured for the MS impact scale
Participation focused
Measures physical and psychological impact of MS
Consistent vailidty compared to other scales
High reliability
