Multiculturalism, migration Flashcards
Outline migration within the UK
Migration refers to the movement of a substantial number of people from one place to another.
Britain saw a large increase in migration within the second half of the 20th century for a range of regions including encouragement from UK governments, economic opportunities, escaping political persecution etc:
For example, the Windrush generation denotes the mass movement of Caribbeans to the UK after being invited by the British government to help deal with labour shortages and help rebuild after WW2.
Outline multiculturalism within the UK
An increase in migration has seen Britain become a multicultural society, meaning it consists of a range of cultures, beliefs and practices.
Before this, Britain was largely seen as homogenous with Christianity having large dominance over public concession. Whilst Christianity still remains the predominant faith within Britain, census data shows a decline in people subscribing to the Christian faith, whilst people are becoming increasingly more agnostic, as well as individuals identifying as Muslim rising.
