Multicellular Organisms: Transport in Plants Flashcards
What is the structure of a leaf?
Waxy cuticle
Upper Epidermis
Palisade Mesophyll (MAIN PHOTOSYNTHETIC LAYER)
Spongy Mesophyll
Lower Epidermis
Stomata + Guard Cells
By what process does water enter plants?
osmosis
What cells absorb the water in the plant?
Root hair cells
What vessel transports water and minerals?
Xylem vessels
What mineral supports xylem vessels?
Lignin
Are xylem alive or dead?
Dead
Why does water need to be transported by the plant?
So it can be used for plant processes such as photosynthesis and transporting materials.
What is transpiration?
The evaporation of water through the stomata.
What 4 factors affect transpiration?
Inc temp -> Inc transpiration
Inc wind speed -> Inc transpiration
Inc surface area -> inc transpiration
Inc humidity -> dec transpiration
What vessels transport sugar in the plant?
Phloem
What is the direction of transport in phloem?
Mainly down
Is phloem alive or dead?
Alive
What is the structure of phloem?
Beside the sieve cells (pores), there are companion cells. Phloem cells have strands of cytoplasm to transport sugar.
