Multicellular organisms Flashcards
What is the cerebrum function
It controls conscious responses and higher centres
What is the function of the medulla
Controls heart and breathing rate and peristalsis (swallowing)
What is the function of the cerebellum
Coordination of movement and balance
What is a stimulus
A stimulus is something which causes a response or reaction.
What is an effector
An effect of is a muscle, gland or organ that is capable of responding to a stimulus
What is a reflex response
A reflex response is a rapid, automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus
Give an example of a reflex response
An example of a reflex response is if you shine a bright light on someone’s eye the pupil gets smaller
Why are reflex responses important
They help your body act quickly and they protect your body and keep it safe.
What is the order in a reflex arc
Stimuli Receptor Sensory neuron Inter neuron Motor neuron Effector Response Reflex action
What is a synapse
Synapses are small gaps between neurons. Electrical impulses can’t be passed across a gap so chemicals are used instead to send the message
Give the meaning of the term homeostasis
The maintenance of a constant internal environment. Keeping everything at the right level like temperature, blood glucose concentration
Describe the responses of the body when the temperature increases
When the temperature increases, the body increases the blood flow to the skins surface which brings all the heat to the surface
What happens to the body when the temperature decreases
Your blood vessels narrow so your blood is kept warm and when it’s pumped to the organs they will be warm
What are hormones
Hormones are chemical messengers released from endocrine glands
What do hormones do
They travel in the bloodstream to target tissues which have receptors for that specific hormone
