Heart Flashcards
Function of the heart
To pump blood around the body
How many chambers
4
Name the chambers
Right atrium. Left atrium
Right ventricle Left ventricle
Why are there 4 valves in the heart
To stop the back flow of blood
What artery gives the heart it’s own blood supply
Coronary artery
Flow of blood through heart - 10 stages
Vena cava to right atrium to right ventricle to pulmonary artery to lungs (where it becomes oxygenated) to pulmonary vein to left atrium to left ventricle to aorta to body and all the way back to vena cava after it’s been around the body.
What does the double circulatory system separate
The oxygenated and deoxygenated blood
Stage 1 of blood flow through heart
Deoxygenated blood flows into the heart via the vena cava into the right atrium
Stage 2 of blood flow through heart
Blood flows from the right atrium to right ventricle
Stage 3 of blood flow through heart
Blood goes to lungs via pulmonary artery where it collects oxygen
Stage 4 of blood flow through heart
Oxygenated blood returns to heart from lungs via the pulmonary vein
Stage 5 of blood flow through heart
Blood flows from left atrium to left ventricle
Stage 6 of blood flow through heart
Blood is pumped from the left ventricle to the body via the aorta
Why does the left side of the heart gave a thicker muscular wall
So that it can pump blood around the body
