Q

What is the name of the process that is vital for information to pass from the STM to the LTM?

A

‘Prolonged Maintainence Rehersal’ is neccessary in order for information to pass to the LTM from the STM.

Q

Give a disadvantage of the MSM.

A

Permissible answers:
- Lack of detail regarding LTM - Tulving et al proposed the three types of LTM.

  • Quantity not quality in regards to the likelihood of information passing to the LTM - Craik and Watkins found that elaborative rehearsal was more effective than prolonged rehearsal.
  • Incorrectly represents STM as a single, unitary store - Shallice and Warrington (KF) suggested there may be more types of STM (poor recall for auditory stimuli - good recall for visual stimuli).

Q

Give an advantage of the MSM.

A

Advantages:

  • HM case study, couldn’t encode new long-term memories but could encode new short-term memories - suggests different storage locations.
  • Support by lab experiments (Miller, Jacobs, Baddeley, Bahrick and Peterson).
