Multi Store Model of Memory* Flashcards
1
Q
Name the three stores of the MSM.
A
3 stores:
- Sensory register
- STM
- LTM
2
Q
Who came up with the 3 single, unitary stores; as seen in the MSM?
A
Atkinson and Shiffrin proposed the 3 stores of the MSM.
3
Q
What is the capacity and duration of the sensory register?
A
Capacity: ‘Huge’
Duration: <0.5 seconds
4
Q
What is the name of the process that is vital for information to pass from the STM to the LTM?
A
‘Prolonged Maintainence Rehersal’ is neccessary in order for information to pass to the LTM from the STM.
5
Q
Give a disadvantage of the MSM.
A
Permissible answers:
- Lack of detail regarding LTM - Tulving et al proposed the three types of LTM.
- Quantity not quality in regards to the likelihood of information passing to the LTM - Craik and Watkins found that elaborative rehearsal was more effective than prolonged rehearsal.
- Incorrectly represents STM as a single, unitary store - Shallice and Warrington (KF) suggested there may be more types of STM (poor recall for auditory stimuli - good recall for visual stimuli).
6
Q
Give an advantage of the MSM.
A
Advantages:
- HM case study, couldn’t encode new long-term memories but could encode new short-term memories - suggests different storage locations.
- Support by lab experiments (Miller, Jacobs, Baddeley, Bahrick and Peterson).
