multi store model of memory Flashcards
the memory process involves 3 things which are
coding
storage
retrieval
coding is
how the information is stored
the 3 types of coding are
visual
acoustic
semantic
visual coding is
what information looks like
acoustic coding is
what information sounds like
semantic coding is
the meaning of the information
storage is
putting information in your head
retrieval is
pulling out the memory when you need it
the 3 stores in the multi store model of memory
sensory register
short term memory
long term memory
steps of the multi store model of memory minus the stores
- environmental stimuli
- attention
- maintenance rehearsal is looped and retrieval
- maintenance rehearsal in and retrieval failure back
who made the MSM
Atkinson and shiffrin
3 things that could happen after and in short term memory
- lost
- maintenance rehearsal and then lost
- maintenance rehearsal so many times it goes into LTM
3 parts to the MSM table
coding
capacity
duration
sensory register’s coding is
sense specific
sensory register’s capacity is
all sensory experience
sensory register’s duration is
less than 1/2 a second
sensory register’s coding, capacity and duration are
coding = sense specific capacity = all sensory experience duration = less than 1/2 a second
STM’s coding is
mainly acoustic
STM’s capacity is
between 5-9 pieces of information
STM’s duration is
up to 30s
STM’s coding, capacity and duration are
coding = mainly acoustic capacity = between 5-9 pieces of information duration = up to 30s
LTM’s coding is
mainly semantic
LTM’s capacity is
potentially unlimited
LTM’s duration is
30s to a lifetime
LTM’s coding, capacity and duration are
coding = mainly semantic capacity = potentially unlimited duration = 30s to a lifetime
supporting evidence for capacity
Jacobs
read out list of numbers
averages of 9.3 and 7.3
MSM says that STM can hold 5-9 pieces of info
supporting evidence for duration
Bahrik et al
yearbook photos and free call of names
photos are prompts
LTM can last a long time
a problem with Jacobs study
done a very long time ago
2 problems with Bahriks study
lack control of study
lose internal validity
3 strengths of MSM
baddeley shows there are 2 separate memory stores
shows coding at STM is acoustic and LTM is semantic
good early model which encouraged further research
supporting evidence for coding
baddeley
learn different lists of words
immediate recall had most mistakes with accoustically similar words
recall after 20 mins had most mistakes with semantically similar words
a problem with Baddeleys study
20 mins may not have been long enough to test LTM
5 weaknesses of MSM
is sensory register an actual store
bahrik doesn’t support that LTM id completely unlimited
shallice and warrington say STM is much more complex that MSM originally suggest
doesn’t account for individual differences
are the processes to simplistic
practical application to MSM
need to pay more attention first and lots of maintenance rehearsal to get to LTM
