Q

Sperling 1960 procedure

A
  • ppts saw a grid for 50 milisecs of various digits
  • after a tone, asked to write down all 12 items or recall a particular row

Q

Sperling 1960 findings

A
  • high tone=top row, medium tone=mid row, low tone=bottom row
  • whole thing = 42% recalled
  • one row = 75% recalled
  • suggest sensory info cant hold info for long around 250 milisecs
  • limitless cap and modality free coding

Q

MSM strengths

A
  • supporting evidence showing existence of STM and LTM as separate stores e.g. Beardsley found pre-frontal cortex active in STM but not ltm
  • case study evidence e.g. HM could form new STM but not ltm

Q

MSM limitations

A
  • research has experimental reductionism e.g. explained w/ isolated variables
  • too simplistic e.g. wmm further divides STM so no single unitary stores as MSM suggest
