multi store model of memory Flashcards
what are the three boxes?
sensory store ,short term memory ,long term memory
what goes into the sensory store?
environmental stimuli
what is the duration of the sensory store?
milliseconds
what is the capacity of the sensory store?
very large
what is the encoding of the sensory store ?
in it’s original format
how does stuff get from the sensory store to the STM ?
attention
what is the capacity of the STM ?
7+/- 2
what is the encoding of the STM?
auditory
what is the duration of the STM?
15s-30s
how can you keep stuff in your STM or get it to your LTM ?
elaborate /maintenance rehearsal
what is the capacity of the LTM?
potentially unlimited
what is the encoding of the LTM?
Semantic
what is semantic?
menaing/contex
what is the duration of the LTM ?
poteninally unlimited
how does stuff from the LTM enter the STM?
retrival
how does stuff leave the STM ?
output
who came up with the multistore model of memory ?
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
who provided support for LTM and STM being diffrent?
Baddelly (1966)
describe Baddelly study ?
he gave participants 1 of 4 lists too remember and found acoustically similar words were harder to recall immediately and semantically similar words were harder to recall after 20 minutes
what did Baddelly study show ?
acoustic occurs in the STM and semantic confusion occurs in the LTM
what is a counterpoint tot Baddelly study ?
artificial stimuli . In real life we remember usefull things (e.g.,people names , faces , places ect) .But many MSM studies use artificial stimuli like lists and numbers.
expand on the point of their is more then one type of STM , which is not shown in the MSM ?
Shallice and Warrington (1970 ) had a patient called KF .KF STM for digiits was very poor when they read them out to him but his recall was much better when he could read the digits himself .THis suggests their is one STM for visual and one for auditory
