Q

Describe the process of the multi store model

A

Information from the senses is picked up by the sensory register. Information is lost if it is not attended to but if attention is paid to the information then it goes to the short term memory. In the STM if the information is rehearsed it can stay in the STM or progress onto the LTM. However, it can be lost from the STM through trace decay or displacement. Information is them store in the LTM and can be retrieved back into the STM

Q

What are three strengths of the multi store model?

A

The serial position effect, Korsakoff’s syndrome and KFs brain damage from the motorbike accident

Q

What is the serial position effect?

A

Words at the beginning and the end are remembered the best. The primacy effect occurs because the first words are rehearsed and transferred into the LTM. The capacity of the STM is limited so words in the middle are lost. The decency effect occurs because the words and still being rehearsed in the STM. Therefore supporting the idea that the STM and LTM are separate stores like the model suggests

Q

How does Korsakoff’s syndrome support the multi store model?

A

Their STM is intact but the transfer of information onto the LTM is impaired. Suggesting that the STM and LTM are separate stores otherwise there would be problems with both stores

Q

How does KF support the multi store model?

A

His STM was severely damaged and became impaired for verbal material. He could only manage 2 digits on the digit span technique. However his STM was largely unaffected for visual material and meaningful sounds. His LTM remained intact. KF supports the multi store model as it shows that there is a separate store for the STM and LTM otherwise both would have been affected by the accident

Q

What are the four limitations of the multi store model?

A

The model is too simple, Craik argues that there are different kinds of rehearsal, Bekerian and Baddeley and the idea of rehearsal for the transfer from STM to LTM

Q

How is the model being too simple a limitation?

A

It assumes that there is a single STM and a single LTM but KFs STM was only affected for verbal information not visual information and there are different types of LTM

Q

How is Craik a limitation of the multi store model?

A

He argues that there are different kinds of rehearsal. Elaborative rehearsal will retain information in LTM because it is being deeply processed. Maintenance/rote rehearsal keeps information in the STM only and is much more shallow level of processing. Therefore criticising the multi store model as it is the kind of rehearsal that you do not the amount

Q

How is Bekerian and Baddeley a limitation of the multi store model?

A

They investigated the BBCs use of jingles to inform listeners of changes in radio frequencies. Although people heard the jingles repeated on numerous occasions they could not remember them. By hearing the jingles repeatedly this is a form of rehearsal so we would expect the, to be recalled is the multi store model was correct

Q

How is the transfer of information through rehearsal a limitation of the multi store model?

A

Most people spend little time rehearsing information although they are constantly storing new information in the LTM. Therefore criticising the role of rehearsal in the multi store model
