Q

STM and LTM being different/separate- limitation

A

brain scans have proved that different parts of the brain are used for STM ( prefrontal cortex) & LTM (hippocampus)

Q

brain damaged patients- support

A

HM STM functioned normally but he struggled to make LTM. KF LTM functioned normally but STM capacity was reduced from 7+-2 to just 2 chunks. Supports the two stores being separate.

Q

Brain damaged patients - limitation

A

With HM some parts of his LTM were unaffected(procedural) but he had difficulty creating episodic memories . E.G, he could learn skills of writing in the mirror but couldn’t remember learning to do that.
For KF he had more difficulty with his auditory STM than his Visual STM.
This suggests the stores aren’t unitary(single stores).

Q

is rehearsal necassary?

A

we don’t rehearse everything we recall e.g. episodic LTMs, and we can fail to recall things that we have rehearsed- this means that rehearsal is not necessary or sufficient for recall of LTM. Craik and Lockhart suggested that its more about the depth of processing rather than mere rehearsal that leads to the creation of LTMs
