interference theory Flashcards
McGeoch and McDonald support
gave participants a list of 10 adjectives, once learned there was a 10 minute interval period in which they learned list b. Recall was poor(12%) if the if list b was synonyms of list b, this had less effect if list b were nonsense syllables(26%) and the least effect when list b were numbers(37%). This proves that the more similar the information the more likely they are to get mixed up.
ecological validity of research
the evidence to support this theory is usually conducted in a lab which means that it is hard to generalise the findings into a real life situation.
limited explanation.
only explains forgetting when two memories are similar. it fails to explain if interference is actually about lack of accessibility or availability of cues that could trigger the result. this means there are specific conditions needed for interference to occur.
rwa?
lots of evidence on the effects of the effects of interference
