Mucosal Immunity Flashcards
Where does the Innate Immune response start and what cells are found there?
The Lamina Propria and antigen presenting B and T- lymphocytes.
What does the Mucosal Immune system produce?
Cytokines, chemokines, and proteins.
What do M-Cells (Manet-cells) do?
Antigen sampling.
What are Peyer’s Patches?
Links to the lymphatic system for lymphatic priming.
What does IgA do in the Mucosal Immune System?
Maintains homeostasis on commensal microbiota.
What are Antimicrobial peptides?
Peptides that bind to the surface of antigens and promote neutralization by Alpha defensins, Beta defensins, and Cathelicidins.
What produces AM molecules
Paneth cells
What are the functions/Properties of AM molecules?
Phagocytic abilities, allows digestion of bacterial components within the cell, limits inflammatory signaling from extracellular bacteria killing, maintains homeostasis in lungs, and recruits immune cells to invading pathogens.
What are some examples of Commensalism?
Microbiota Flora in humans, diptheroid, Bacillus spp.
What are the three levels of defense by intestinal microbiota
- Saturation of Colonization
- Kill Zone- primes barrier immunity expression of mucin, IgA, and AMPs
- Enhances Immune Responses-promoting expression of IL-22 b y T cells and NK cells (increases epithelial resistance) Primes secretion of IL-1b by intestinal monocytes and DCs (promotes recruitment of inflammatory cells to infection site).
(True/False) The outer mucosal layer is largely resistant to bacterial colonization because of high concentrations of bacteriacidal AMPs.
False- Inner mucosal layer.
(True/False) Microfold cells (M cell) cover lymphoid follicdome in the mucosal surface and lack microvilli.
True
What is the IgA-mediated excretory pathway or Immune exclusion?
A process that limits the access of some microorganisms and antigens to mucosal barriers.
Where are the concentration of TCRaB the highest?
The Lamina Propria Lymphocytes.
Where is the concentration of TCRyo the highest?
The Intra-epithelial lymphocytes
What is the first immune cell line of defense in the GI?
Intraepithelial Lymphocytes
What IFN and factor are produced by Intraepithelial Lymphocytes?
IFN gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha.
What IFN and T cell are overproduced in Chronic Enteropathy?
Th-1and IFN gamma
What T-cell response and ILs are involved in Chronic Enteropathy?
Th-2 response with IL-4 AND -13
Which species of dogs commonly have IgA deficiency?
German Shepard and Shar-Peis
