Mucles And Bones Flashcards
What are the three main functions of the skeleton?
. Supporting soft tissues
. Protecting your organs
. Allowing movement
What are the main bones?
skull, humerus, clavicle, ulna, radius, sternum, ribs, vertebrae, carpals, pelvis, femur, metacarpals, phalanges, patella, tibia, fibula, metatarsals, tarsals.
Compact bone
It makes up the outer layer of the bone. Compact bone is dense and heavy and gives the bone much of its strength
Sponge bone
It resembles honeycomb. It is light but yet provides a strong inner structure to the bone.
What are bones made up of?
Bone is made of collagen calcium phosphate calcium carbonate, Also bone contains bone marrow
What are joints?
A joint is where two bones meet together. Most joints allow movement, and the type of joint determines the range of movement of the bone.
What protects the bone?
Cartilage and synovial fluid
Cartilage
a smooth and slippery material that covers the ends of the bones that are moving against each other. It helps to cushion the impact of movement.
Synovial fluid
which lubricates the bone ends and allows them to slide over each other freely.
Ligaments
Ligaments connect bone to bone.
Tendons
They connect muscle to bone.
Muscles
Muscle is a type of tissue that contracts and stretches to move a bone.
