poverty and malnutrition, famine and war

- they were a breeding ground for disease
- there was no sewers so household waste was thrown onto the streets
- there was lots of animals in towns so manure rotted on the streets

- houses were always very damp
- the smoke from houses would cause respiratory problems
- straw on the floor attracted rats, lice and mice which spread diseases
- couldnt ever find clean water so everyone used dirty water
