MT.6 LT.4 Flashcards
What is a solution?
A homogenous mixture that has the same composition, color, density, and taste throughout.
There are two parts of a solution. What are they as well as an expiation.
Solute: substance that is dissolve Solvent: substance that is doing the dissolving
Do solutions always have to be dissolved by solids into liquids?
Nope!
Explain what an alloy is
A solution fo metals dissolved in other metals
How does an alloy work?
Each metal will melt down to a liquid state, mixed, and then allowed to solidify once again
Give example of what Bronze. Brass, and Sterling Silver will turn into
Bronze=Copper and Zinc Brass=copper and tin Sterling Silver=copper and silver
What is solubility
The amount of liquid that can dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a given temperature
Describe what an unsaturated solution is
The ability to dissolve more solute in the mixture. Not at full capacity
Describe what a saturated solution is
The solution contains all of the solute it can hold
Describe what a supersaturated solution
The solution hold more solute that what can be dissolved
Why is water a great dissolver?
Water is polar
What is polar?
oppositely charged ends
How does Dissociation work?
The process in which ionic compounds (salt and crystals) separate into ions, usually in a reversible manner
Give more information of Dissociation
Positive ends of water attract to negative ions of salt. Attractive force ions away from crystal. Water molecules surround ions. This will continue until all ions are separated
What are the 3 factors that affect the rate of dissolving?
Smaller solute size, Heating the solvent, and Stirring the solution
