MT.6 LT.1 Flashcards
What is matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass
Is matter a substance, mixture, or both?
Both
What is a substance?
All particles in matter are identical (fixed composition)
what is an element?
Simplest form of matter from which more complex substance are made
What’s are three examples of elements
Helium, Carbon, Iron
What is monatomic?
Elements that are stable as an individual atom like Helium or Argon
What is Diatomic?
Elements like oxygen and Nitrogen that are stable as 2 atoms of themselves bonded together O2
Explain compounds
2 or more elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion, can be broken down only by chemical reactions
What is a mixture?
2 or more substance physically combined
Describe what Homogeneous is as well as three examples
Components are evenly distributed out on a microscopic level Ex. Bleach, Lemonade, and Coffee
Describe what Heterogeneous is as well as three examples
Substances in the mixture are NOT evenly spread out Ex. Salad Dressing, Paint, Cereal
Name and explain the two types of Heterogenous Mixtures
Colloid are small particles remain dispersed through mixture. Suspension are larger particles that appear uniformly distributed but will settle out of the mixture over time, or is mixed in
Explain the Tyndall Effect
Scattering of light by mixture and only Collide and Suspension have particles large enough to do their effect
