Essential hypertension
Pregnancy-Induced/Gestational Hypertension and Pre-eclampsia?
Essential a.k.a pre-existing, occurs before 20 weeks gestation
PIH and pre-eclampsia after 20 weeks gestation, PIH has no other features.
What is given to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia for women with risk factors?
150mg Aspirin from 12 weeks to term
What are the high risk factors for pre-eclampsia?
Hypertensive disease in a previous pregnancy
Chronic kidney disease
Chronic hypertension
Type 1 or 2 diabetes
Autoimmune disease
What are the moderate risk factors for pre-eclampsia?
Primiparous
Pregnancy interval >10 years
Multiple pregnancy
Age >40
BMI >35
Family history of pre-eclampsia
What is the anti-hypertensive of choice in the postnatal period?
Enalapril
What are the contraindications to the use of Labetalol?
Asthma
Diabetes
What are the contraindications to the use of Methyldopa?
Avoid in the postnatal period due to risk of postnatal depression
What are the features of HELLP syndrome?
Haemolysis
Elevated liver enzymes
Low platelets
What is the treatment of eclamptic seizures?
Magnesium sulphate
