MSM Flashcards
Memory
System of retaining information from our daily experiences
Features of the sensory register
Very large capacity
Duration = less than 2 seconds
Each sense codes differently
Features of short term memory
Capacity = 5 - 9 items
Duration = 18 - 30 seconds
Coding= acoustically
Features of long term memory
Unlimited capacity
Duration=up to a lifetime
Coding-semantically (meaning)
Strengths of the multi store model
Supporting evidence for the capacity of the STM (Jacobs)
Supporting evidence for the duration of the LTM (Bahrick)
Supporting evidence for the coding of the STM and LTM (Baddeley)
Limitations of the MSM
LTM is not a unitary store (Clive Wearing)
Jacobs digit span task
Participants were presented with a sequence of digits and were asked to recall them in the correct order
If they were correct they were given a sequence that was one digit longer
This was repeated until they could a longer recall correctly - digit span
Letters = 7.3
Numbers = 9.3
Bahrick (1975) research for duration of LTM
Gave participants so photos and asked them to identify their high school classmates
When tested within 1s years = 90% recognition accuracy
48 years after = 70% recognition accuracy
Baddeley research for coding of STM and LTM
Gave groups of participants a semantically similar and an acoustically similar list
Immediate recall = participants struggled more with acoustically similar list
Delayed recall = participants struggled with semantically similar list
Clive wearing
Causing extensive brain damage
His long term declarative memory was affected (couldn’t remember his wedding)
His procedural memory was normal (he could play the piano)
Primary and recency effect
When immediately recalling a sequence of items, recall of words at the beginning and end of the list will be higher
Words at the start= rehearsed into LTM
Words at the end = still in capacity of STM
