MSM Flashcards
Define memory
Structures and processes involovedin the storage and retrival of infomation.
Who created the MSM
Atkinson and Shriffrin in 1968
What are the three stores of the MSM
- Sensory
- Short term
- Long term
How is infomation from the STM moved to the LTM
Elaborative Rehursal
How is infomation transfered from the LTM back to STM
Retrival
Main features of the MSM
- Each store is sepearte
- Each store acts independantly
- Each store carries out a specific function
How does MSM work
- Attention
- Rehearse
-Retrival
What is the encoding, duration and capacity of the sensory memory
capacity - unlimited
duration - 1/2 a second
encoding - semantically
What is the capacity, encoding and duration of STM
encoding - acoustically
capacity - 7 +/- 2
duration - 18-30 seconds
What is the encoding , duration and capacity of LTM
encoding - semantically
capacity - unlimited
duration - potentially unlimited
Jacobs - Capacity of STM
He found that the capacity for numbers and letters were slightly different. 9.3 for digits and 7.3 for letters. This shows that STM has a limited capacity of around 7 +/-2 chuncks of infomation
Peterson and Peterson - Duration of STM
He found that after a 3 second delay 80% of trigrams were recalled on average compared to only 10% after 18 seconds. This suggests STM has a limited duration of less than 30 seconds
Baharick - Duration of LTM
He found that 90% of pps were able to recognise all their former classmates after 14 years and 60% could recognise all after 47 years. This suggests LTM has a potentially unlimited duration.
Baddley - Encoding of LTM
Pps were gave 4 sets of word lists. When asked to recall in order after a few minutes pps made the most mistakes on the simialre meaning word lists. This suggests infomation is ecoded semantically to the LTM.
