Explanations for foggeting Flashcards
What is interference theory
Suggests there is interference between two pieces of infomation that coflict with each other. Resulting in one or both pieces for infomation being forgoten
What are the two types of interference
Retroactive interference and Proactive interference
What is proactive interference
When an older memory interferes with a newer one
What is retroactive interference
When a newer meory interferes with an older one
Research support for interference
Dallenbatch left 2 groups of roaches in a maze to figure out the way out of the maze. One group went to sleep and others could do anthing. Next day group with no interference (slept) escaped the maze earlier. Suggesting interference plays a part in memory recall.
What is the retriaval failure due to sbsence of cues
If we cannot remember infomation it may be due to being in not familiar situation to when memory was originally stored
Different types of cues
- context cues
- state cues
- orginisational cues
What is a orginisational cue
Help us arrange and structure knowladge and materials
What are state cues
When internal enviroment is different at recall to how it was encoded
What are context cues
when the external enviroment is different at recall to when it was encoded
