MSK Upper ORA Flashcards
What equipment do you need for MSK Upper assessment?
tape measure
What three questions would you ask for the MSK upper assessment?
1) Are you experiencing any problems with your joints? Any pain? If yes, OPQRSTUV.
2) Any problems with your muscles in the upper body, for example pain or cramping? Any weakness?
3) Any previous injuries to the upper limbs, such as sprains or fractures?
Which joints are to be tested with the upper MSK assessment?
1) TMJ
2) Cervical spine
3) Shoulder
4) Elbow
5) Wrist and hand
What ROM and muscle testing do you complete for TMJ?
- vertical motion
- lateral motion
- protrusion
What are the steps involved in assessing the TMJ?
1) Inspect: symmetry
2) Palpate: while patient opens mouth. Have them clench their teeth and palpate the contracted temporalis and masseter muscles.
3) ROM: vertical, lateral, protrusion
4) Test strength: Have patient open mouth against resistance (also tests cranial nerve 5 - trigeminal nerve)
What are the steps involved in assessing the cervical spine?
1) Inspect: alignment of head and neck
2) Palpate: spinous processes and the sternomastoid, trapezius, and paravertebral muscles
3) Test ROM: flexion (touch chin to chest), extension (lift chin to ceiling), lateral bending (move each ear toward your should without raising your shoulder), rotation (turn the chin toward each shoulder)
4) Test strength: rotation (turn ear towards should against my resistance) - this also tests cranial nerve 11 - spinal accessory nerve)
What are the steps involved in assessing the shoulders?
1) Inspect: compare both shoulders anteriorly and posteriorly, checking size and contour and equality of bony landmarks.
