What questions should you ask about joint pain?

A

What join hurts
When did it start? Is it getting better or worse
Is it one joint or multiple joints
Do the joints swell up, become red or get a rash?
Does anything make the joint swelling better or worse
Is the joint stiff on a morning? How long for?
Does the joint pain keep them up at night?
Is the problem affecting everyday activities
Is there any eye, bowel or bladder problems
Any trauma in the past or similar experiences?
Does the patient have any family history of conditions?

What should you ask a patient with back pain?

A

When did start? Anything happen then?
Is it getting worse?
How would you describe the character?
Does anything make the pain better or worse?
Have you taken any medication for it?
Ever had anything like this before?
Any numbness, tingling or loss of power in the legs?
Does the pain ever wake them up in the night?
Have they had this problem before?
Have they had any headaches?
Have they been incontinent to faeces or urine?
Are they depressed at all at the moment?
Have they had any trauma or injury?
Have they had weight loss, vomiting, anorexia or night sweats.
Had they had any bowel, bladder or eye symptoms
