Causes of Painful Joints

A
  1. Gout (affects big toe first)
  2. Pseudogout (stiffness, warmth, big joints)
  3. Rheumatoid arthritis (swan neck deformity, ulnar deviation)
  4. Osteoarthritis
  5. Lupus (systemic: butterfly rash, sensitivity to light, kidney problems, mouth sores, muscle pain)
  6. Osteomyelitis (fever, pus, sweating)
  7. Reactive arthritis (cant see, cant pee cant climb a tree)

Questions to ask for joint pain?

A
  1. Symmetry in joint pain?
  2. Any stiffness?
  3. Any swelling?
  4. Any diurnal variation in symptoms?
  5. Does activity or heat make symptoms better?
  6. Any lumps or swelling; Heberden’s/ Bouchard = osteoarthritis
  7. Deformities: swan neck, ulnar deviation, boutienner’s deformity of the thumb
