Causes of diarrhoea
- Infection: C. difficile

- Food allergy/ intolerance e.g. coeliac
- IBS
- Constipation with overflow

- Medication e.g. laxatives
Causes of Jaundice
- Hepatitis
- Liver cirrhosis
- Biliary obstruction
Causes of Aphthous ulceration
- B12 deficiency
- Folate deficiency
- Iron deficiency
- Crohn’s disease
Causes of Haematemesis
- Oesophageal varice rupture
- Mallory-Weiss tear
- Peptic/ Duodenal ulcer
Causes of Dysphagia
- Oesophageal cancer
- Secondary to stroke
Causes of Odynophagia (pain when swallowing)
- Oesophageal stricture
- Infection e.g. Oesophageal candidiasis
Causes of Abdominal Pain
Localised:
1. IBD
2. IBS
3. Appendicitis
4. Pancreatitis
5. Gall stones
6. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
7. Indigestion
8. Diverticulitis
9. Oesophageal issues can radiate e.g. MW tear or ruptured OV
10. Cardiomyopathy
Generalised:
12. Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Causes of Abdominal Distension
4 F’s:
1. Fat
2. Fetus
3. Flatus (constipation)
4. Fluid (obstruction leading to fluid moving out)
Causes of Constipation
- Dehydration
- Decreased bowel mobility
- Medications e.g. opiates or anti-emetics; ondansetron
Causes of Steatorrhea (fatty streaks in faeces)
- Pancreatitis
- Pancreatic Cancer
- Biliary Obstruction
- Coeliac Disease
Causes of Malaena
- Peptic/ Duodenal ulcer
Causes of Haematochezia
- Haemorrhoids
- Anal fissures
- Lower GI malignancy
Systemic Symptoms associated with GI
- Weight Loss (malnutrition or malignancy)
- Fever
- Pruritus (bile in blood due to obstruction)
- Anorexia
- Fatigue
- Nausea
Questions to ask for vomiting presentation
- Presence of blood in vomit
- Presence of bile in vomit
- Volume of blood
- Number of episodes
- Severity of vomiting/ volume of vomit
- Any medication taken for the vomit
- Abdominal associated symptoms e.g. change in bowel habit, weight loss, abdominal pain, blood passage par rectum, retching, fainting
