MSK Flashcards
What questions are important to ask during interview for MSK
Medication history
- HRT - hormone replacement therapy
- Pain relief
- Ca2+ intake
Mobility
- Acitivity patterns, exercise programmes
Difficulty with ADL's - Self care behaviours Mobiity aids Hx of falls Safety concerns
What important questions would u ask rt joints, muscles, bones
Joints
- Pain, stiffness, swelling, heat, redness, limitation of mvmnt
Muscles
- Pain, cramps, weakness
Bones
- Pain, deformity, trauma (fractures, sprains, dislocations).
How would you explain the ax to the pt at the start and what is important to ask prior to starting ax?
What we’ll be doing now is a muscUloskeletal assessment which involves two parts - the first part will involve me palpating specific joints and assessing your range of movement. the second part i will be testing your upper and lower muscle resistance.
is this okay with you?
do you have any tender areas?
When inspecting and palpating each joint what are you feeling for?
Swelling, tenderness, temp change, crepitus, masses.
How many areas/joints will you be assessing? Name all in order
Neck Shoulders Elbows Wrists Fingers Hips Knees Ankles Spine
Which upper and lower body muscles will you be testing resistance on? and what action on each
also should the client be standing or sitting during this
Shoulder shrug
Flexion/extension of elbows
Dorsiflextion + plantar flexion of each foot
Flexion of knee while u try to pull the knee forward (they’re trying to pull it back
sitting with bed slightly elevated!
Neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers - what two actions will u get the pt to do on each one
Neck - Lateral bending of the head + rotation of 70deg R+L.
Shoulders - forward flexion and hyperextension(behind back) + adduction and abduction (abduction - away from abs).
Elbows - flexion and extension(flexion flexing your triceps) + pronation and supination
Wrists - palmer flexion and extension
ulnar/radial deviation
Fingers(only one movement)
abduction of fingers+tight fist.
Hips, knees, ankles, and spine - what two actions will u get the pt to do on each one
LAYING DOWN ONLY FOR HIPS AND KNEES.
Hips - leg raise + flexion and extension(knee to hip line and back down)
Knees - (only one movement) flexion+extension(knee to chest)
SITTING DOWN
Ankles - plantar/dorsiflexion + inversion/eversion
STANDING
Spine - lateral bending(side drop), rotation of 30deg.
Muscle resistance - what actions are you doing for all 4?
Shoulder shrug against resistance
Flexion extension of elbow - support by holding underneath arm near elbow
Knee flexion and extension
Foot - dorsiflexion+plantar flexion.
Normal findings at end of ax?
(Name) had active movement in all areas and had equal resistance in their upper and lower body No swelling/masses/crepitus felt.
