MS Flashcards
CIS
Clinically isolated syndrome (CIS)
* refers to a single episode of neurological symptoms
suggestive of MS
* often, on investigation using MRI, evidence of
abnormality in the brain or spinal cord is found
RRMS
characterized by unpredictable but clearly defined
- relapses during which new symptoms appear or existing
ones get worse
* in between relapses, recovery is complete or near
complete to pre-relapse function (remission)
* most common type of MS, 85% of people diagnosed with
MS have RRMS
SPMS
follows a diagnosis of
RRMS
* over time distinct relapses and remissions become less
apparent and the disease begins to progress steadily,
sometimes with plateaus
PPMS
Primary-progressive MS (PPMS) is characterized by a slow
- accumulation of disability, without defined relapses
* approximately 10% of people with MS
main MS issues
optic, bladder, weaknessm balance, depression
optic
- nystgmus

- optic neuritis
bladder
- urgency, frequenct, retention, infection
weakness
- fatugue,
- temperature can cause weakness
balance
- risk for falls
depresssion, axiety mood disorders
MS pain
types of pain and tx
neuropathic pain
- demyelination in CNS
musculoskeletal pain
- abnormal stress on joints, ligaments, muscles
tx
disease modifying therapies
- reduce frequency and severity of relapses
- reduce lesions in the brain and spinal cord
relapse managment
- steroids
- help decrease severity
sympmo manament
- baclofen
- gabapentin
- cannabis
- botox
