Mrs Fairfax and Adele Varens Flashcards
Mrs fairfax is the voice of convention:
Mrs fairwax is the housekeepers at Thor field -she’s a steady character who behaves in line with social convention
She’s kind to Jane when arrives at thronfield , and helps her to deal with the social formalities when Rochester’s guest are present
However , she’s not very inquisitive and only gives Jane minimal information when she asks about other characters- this is very different to Jane’s character
She strongly disapproves of mr Rochester marrying Jane and. Tells her “keep me Rochester at a distance” she is septical that me Rochester is marring her love and is the only voice in the novel that predicts that the marriage will not work

Adele is mostly used as a plot device:
Mr R doesn't think he's Adele's father A child was called 'illegitimate' If its parents weren't married to each other illegitimate children were considered second-class citizens in the 19th century
Mr Rochester brought Adele to England to give her a better life and to try and do some good after having a sinful and selfish lifestyle
Adele is vain and silly . She is caricature of stereotypical French women at the time , who liked gifts and fancy possessions
She doesn’t do much in the novel and Bronte mostly uses her as a plot device . Adele is the reason that Jane comes to thorn field and she reveals things about other character
- Blanche appears as impatient/snobbish-she calls Adele a “tiresome monkey”
- Jane’s compassion is revealed-she says that Adele shouldn’t pay for the sins of her parents and continues to look after her regardless of her illegitimate status
Character-Mr Rochester:
Mr Rochester often gets frustrated with Adele , but he does seem to care for her. He brought her home when most 19th century men wouldn’t have done , and this help the reader to believe him when he claims that he’s done the right thing
