Jane describes mr brocklehurst as a “black pillar” with a face “like a carved mask”-he’s described like a stone , reflecting his cold , imposing nature

He is miserly-he tries to run lowood on as little money as possible , and challenges miss temple whenever he sees that more money has been spent

Many of the girls at lowood die of typus, suggesting that the conditions Mr brocklehurst imposes are too harsh

He had a rigid view of Christianity and is quick to judge people - he tells Jane she has a “wicked heart” just because she doesn’t like reading the psalms

Bronte exposes him as a hypocrite when his wife and daughters appear at lowood .they are “spendidly attired” and have “ elaborately Curled” hair, but Mr brocklehurst has just ordered that his pupils “to knots must be cut off”
