Q

Bessie is kind to Jane at Gateshead:

Bessie is a servant at Gateshead , and although she’s not always kind to Jane, she’s much kinder than anyone else.
After Jane is shirt up in the red-room, she says that “missis was rather too hard” and calls Jane a “poor child”

She recognises that mrs reed is cruel to Jane, but can’t do anything about it because she’s employed by mrs reed

She has a “quicker temper” that Jane dislikes-“she is always scolding me”. But she does care for Jane and they are pleased to see each other when Bessie visits Lowood and Jane returns to Gateshead

Q

Both are surrogate mothers to Jane:

Bessie nurses Jane after her illness at Gateshead and tells her stories -things that a mother might do

When Jane visits Bessie and her family , she describes the “occasional tap or push” that Bessie gives her own children as being “just as she used to give me”

When miss temple leaves lowood , Jane describes how she has been a “ mother governess” and “companion” to Jane during her time there

However , both miss temple and Bessie ultimately fail as mother- figures-Bessie is restricted in what she can do because she’s only a servant and miss temple leaves Jane behind when she gets married

Q

Blanche is a conventional aristocratic beauty:

Jane describes Blanche as being “moulded like a Dian” (a goddess)-she is a beautiful young women

She would make a conventional wife for Rochester and they appear to get on well when she’s at thorn field. She comes from a wealthy family and looks “majestic”.

However, Jane sees that Blanche doesn’t really please Mr Rochester -the “arrows” that Blanche “fires” at him Bounce off his “breast” and fall “harmless at his feet”

Blanche is also snobbish and rude. She shows off her knowledge and is deliberately rude about governess in front of Jane , calling them “detestable” and “ridiculous”

Her shallow nature is exposed by Mr Rochester when he’s disguised as a gipsy-the “gipsy” tells her that Rochester is not very rich and she loses interest In marrying him.

Writers technique:
Blanche presence foreshadows the revelation about Bertha-Blanche is the first barrier between Jane and Rochester
