Mr Birling Flashcards
I’d give thousands
Shows that he now cares but this is too late, wants to avoid a scandal and panicks at the last moment once it all sinks in
Community and all that nonsense
Shows how he feels toward socialism and how he rejects the idea of collective responsibility
Unsinkable
Seems like a fool, the titanic did actually sink and Mr Birling got it completely wrong
The Germans don’t want war
Again seems like an idiot, the Germans did end up having a war
There’s a very good chance of knighthood
He’s very ambitious
A hard headed, practical man of business
Only cares about he money he makes in business and not those who work for him
A man has to make his own way
Presented as selfish
There’ll be a public scandal unless we’re lucky
Begins to get anxious about how his reputation may be ruined
Silly little war scares
Dramatic irony as they were just silly little scares because a war did actually happen
Cheap labour
This is how Mr Birling sees people from the lower classes
25 shillings a week… I refused of course
Mr Birling isn’t even ashamed that he couldn’t raise her salary and makes this very clear when he says this to the inspector
