Movment Science Flashcards
Proximal
Positioned nearest to the center of the body or other defined reference point
Distal
Positioned furthest from the center point of the body or other defined reference point
Superior
Positioned above an identified reference point
Medial
Relatively closer to the midline of the body
Lateral flexion
Bending of the spine side to side
Ipsilateral
Positioned on the same side of the body
Isokinetic
Constant speed over full rom
Horizontal abduction and adduction
Movement of the arm or thigh in the transverse plane either to an anterior or lateral position
Sagittal plane
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into left be right halves
Frontal plane
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into front and back halves
Eccentric
Lengthening
Extension
A straightening movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments increases in the sagittal plane
Plantar flexion
Extension at the ankle pointing the foot downwards
Isometric
Force produced is equal to resistive force so no change in position occurs
Concentric
Contract
Rotation
The external or internal rotation of a segment towards or away from the midline of the body
Eversion
The movement of the foot outward
Posterior
Positioned on or towards the back of the body
Abduction
A movement in the frontal plane away from the midline of the body
Adduction
Movement in the frontal plane back towards the midline of the body
Scapular retraction pronation elevation and depression
Inward outward upward and downward movement of the shoulder blades
Pronation or supination of the foot
Mutiplanar movement of the foot and ankle complex consisting of dorsiflexion and ankle abduction or inversion and ankle adduction
Inferior
Positioned below an identified reference point
Radioulnar supination or pronation
The outward or inward rotation of the hand
Lateral
Relatively farther away from the midline or towards the outside of the body
Anterior
Positioned on or towards the front of the body
Inversion
The movement of the foot inward
Transverse plane
An imaginary bisector that divides the body into top and bottom halves
Flexion
A bending movement in which the relative angle between two adjacent segments decreases in the sagittal plane
Dorsiflexion
Flexion at the ankle
Contra lateral
Positioned on the opposite side of the body
