Movements of the Femur at the Hip Joint Flashcards
a forward movement of the femur (movement in the anterior plane)
flexion
is the return movement from flexion (movement in the posterior plane)
extension
is a backward movement of the femur beyond normal anatomical position and this
movement is limited, if not completely absent in most individuals (except dancer and gymnasts) with the
advantage being a restriction in movement to keep the hip joint stable
hyperextension
is lateral movement of the femur
abduction
is medial movement of the femur
adduction
is rotation of the femur around its longitudinal axis, so that the knee is turned
outward
lateral (outward) rotation
is rotation of the femur around its longitudinal axis, so that the knee is turned
inward
medial (inward) rotation
