- movement of ppl to an area or country, across a specified boundary, to establish a new permanent place of residence ( > 12 months)

- movement within a country or region w/o crossing international borders

What are e.g. of international migration patterns?
A
- inc. rapidly since 2014: 230M ppl lived in a country that wasn’t their place of birth
- 1990s: mainly to world destinations (e.g. New York), now many cities in developing countries are major hubs for migration (e.g. Mumbai)
- due to globalisation: improved transport networks allow easier travel + rise in global trading encouraged more international migrants
- 70% international migrants are within working age

A
- 2000: 740M internal migrants globally, excluding smaller distances bc hard to trace
- urbanisation = largest form of internal migration
