Movement Terminology Flashcards
Describe anatomical position
standing erect, facing the observer feet flat on the floor palms facing forward forearms are supinated radius and ulna are parallel
in classification of movement, what is active movement
a voluntary movement performed by you. the muscle is activated & uses energy
in classification of movement, what is passive movement
a movement that is performed to another person. no active muscle contraction
in classification of movement, what is resisted movement
resistance is applied against an active movement
What is abduction?
lateral movement away from the midline
Which plane does abduction occur?
Frontal
What is adduction?
medial movement toward the midline of the trunk
Which plane does abduction occur?
Frontal
What is flexion?
Bending movement resulting in a decrease in the joint angle.
What is extension?
Straightening movement that increases the joint angle.
What is the movement that returns from flexion to the anatomical position?
extension
What is hyperextension?
movement beyond the anatomical position
Where does flexion occur?
Sagittal plane
Where does extension occur?
Sagittal plane
Circumduction
circular movement of the distal end of a limb describing a cone, combining the movements of flexion, extension, abduction and adduction
What type of movement is circumduction.
circular movement
which end of a limb is involved in circumduction?
distal
which 4 movements combined create circumduction?
flexion, extension, abduction and adduction
In which plane does circumduction occur?
It doesn’t occur in any one plane.
What is another name for external rotation?
Lateral rotation
What is another name for lateral rotation?
External rotation
What is another name for internal rotation?
Medial rotation
What is another name for medial rotation?
Internal rotation
What is external/lateral rotation?
Rotary motion around the longitudinal axis of a bone away from the midline.
