Movement, Planes And Axis Flashcards
What are the types of movement
Flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, rotation, circumduction, plantar flexion, Dorsi flexion
Abduction
A movement that pushes away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
A movement that pulls towards the mid line of the body.
Circumduction
Moving a ball and socket joint in a spherical or conical shape like the wrist moving around a pivot point.
Dorsi flexion
Bending or flexing the toes upwards brining them closer to the shin.
Flexion
A bending movement that decreases the angle at a joint.
What are the three types of plane
Frontal, saggital, transverse
Saggital plane
Divides the body from top to bottom vertically.
Frontal plane
Also divides the body from top to bottom vertically but front and back sections.
Transverse plane
Divides the body across the middle horizontally giving top and bottom sections.
Three types of axis
Vertical axis, sagittal axis and frontal axis
Frontal axis
Runs from side to side formed by the intersection of the frontal and transverse planes. For example, when a person performs a somersault they rotate around this axis.
Extension
An extending movement that increases the angle of a body part.
Plantar flexion
Bending or flexing the toes downwards increasing the angle at the ankle and moving them further away from the shin.
Saggital axis
this line runs from front to back through the centre of the body. For example, when a person performs a cartwheel they are rotating about the sagittal axis. This is between the saggital and transverse plane.
