Movement Into and Out Of Cells Flashcards
Define Particles?
-The smallest pieces of which a substance is made
-Particles can be molecules atoms or ions
Define kinetic energy?
-The energy of moving objects
Define Diffusion?
-The net movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of lower concentration down a concentration gradient as a result of random movement
-The energy for diffusion comes from random movement or ions
Define net movement?
-Overall or average movement
Define concentration gradient?
-An imaginary slope from a high concentration to a lower concentration
How does temperature affect particles?
-The higher the temperature the faster the particles move
-This is because the particles have more kinetic energy which makes them move faster
Why does diffusion take place in plants?and what are some of the common examples?
-Diffusion occurs in plants to get rid of wasteful products
-In plants, plants need carbon for photosynthesis they get this as carbon diffuses from the air and enters the stomata.
What is a concentration gradient?
-A concentration gradient is a barrier that separates low concentration and the high concentration
-The high concentration is at the top of the slope and low concentration at the bottom of the slope
Why does diffusion take place in animals?and what are some common examples?
-Diffusion occurs in animals to get rid or waste products such as carbon dioxide.
-It is importing as it allows for gas exchange between carbon dioxide and oxygen in the alveoli through the cell membrane in the lungs
What is a solute?Solvent? and Solution?
-A solute is a substance that has dissolved in a liquid
-The liquid is called the solvent and in organisms is always water
-The solution is the final/full result
What are the function of water?
-Water acts as a solvent that dissolves many other substances in itself
-It also acts as transportation of fluids around the body
Define independent variable?
-The variable that you change in an experiment
Define dependant variable?
-The variable that you measure as you collect your results
Define compound?
-A substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in fixed proportion
Define partially permeable membranes?
-A membrane (very thin layer) that lets some particle move through it, prevents other passing through
Define Osmosis in terms of water potential?
-The net movement if water molecules from a region of high water potential to a region of low water potential through a partially permeable membrane
Define High water potential?
-An area where there are not a lot water molecule in a concentration solution
Define low water potential?
-An area where there are not many water molecules in a concentration solution
Define Turgid?
-A description of a plant cell that is tight and firm
Define flaccid?
-A description of a plant cell that is soft
Define plasmolysed?
-A description of a plant cell that which the cell membrane tears away from the cell wall
Define Turgor pressure?
-The pressure of the water pushing outward on a plant cell wall
Define Turgor pressure?
-The pressure of the water pushing outward on a plant’s cell wall
Why is water potential and Osmosis important to an Organism?
-Water potential and Osmosis are great importance as they affect how an organism takes and loses water
