Flexion
Action of bending a joint such that the joint angle decreases (Palm to face)
Extension
Action of extending a joint such that the joint angle decreases (Palm away from face)
Abduction
Occurs when you move a body segment to the side, away from your body (Lifting part of a jumping jack)
Adduction
Occurs when you move a body segment towards your body (Dropping part of a jumping jack)
Supination
Rotating the wrist such that the palm of the hand is facing upwards (Hand flip)
Pronation
Rotating the wrist such that the back of the hand is facing forward (Hand flip)
Plantar Flexion
Specific to the ankle joint, occurs when toes are pointed
Dorsiflexion
Specific to the ankle joint, occurs when ankle is bent to bring toes closer to the shin
Inversion
Associated with the ankle joint, result of standing on the outer edge of foot
Eversion
Associated with the ankle joint, result of standing on the inner edge of foot
External Rotation
Results when a body part is twisted or turned outward from the midline
Circumduction
Combination of flexion, extension, abduction and adduction in one. (Ball thrown with windmill action)
Elevation
Movement in an upward direction
Depression
Movement in a downwards direction
Protraction
Movement in a forward direction
