Anatomical Position
- Standing upright
- Head, eyes, toes and palms forward
- Feet together, arms slightly out to the side
Anterior/Posterior
Anterior: Front surfaces of the body
Posterior: Back surfaces of the body
Superior/Inferior
Superior: Upward surfaces of the body
Inferior: Downward surfaces of the body
Proximal/Distal
Proximal: Toward the point of attachment of the limb to the body
Distal: Away from the point of attachment
Superficial/Deep
Superficial: On, or close to the surface of the body
Deep: Away from the surface of the body
Medial/Lateral
Medial: Towards the midline
Lateral: Away from the midline
Midline
Centre divide through the middle of the body
Frontal Plane
Vertical, extends from one side of the body to the other
Transverse Plane
Horizontal, divides the body into upper and lower segments
Sagittal Plane
- Vertical, extends from the front of the body to the back
- Follows midline
Horizontal Axis
Extends from one side of the body to the other
Longitudinal Axes
Vertical, running head to toe
Antero-Posterior Axes
Extends from the front of the body to the back
