postural tremor of hands, head, or voice, FHx common, may improve temporarily c/ alcohol, no abnormal findings other than tremor
benign essential tremor
any combo of tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and progressive postural instability, cognitive impairment is sometimes prominent
parkinsonism
multiple motor and phonic tics, symptoms begin before age 21, tics for at least a yr- vary in #,freq and nature
tourette syn
primary idiopathic or 2/2 parkinson dz, preg, iron def anemia, peripheral neuropathy,
irresistible urge to move limbs esp at rest
restless leg syn
nonspecific chronic static impairment of muscle tone, strength, coordination or movement. nonprogressive insult before birth, during delivery, or perinatal- neuro deficits, spasticity, ataxia, seizure, mental retard
cerebral palsy
occasional jerks esp when drifting to sleep- epilepsy, seizure, uremic/ metab encephalopathies, drugs (levodopa, TCA), withdrawal, anoxic brain inj
myoclonus
blepharospasm, periorbital twitch, protracted stare, gaze deviated up and lat or down, open mouth tongue protrusion- antiemetics, HSV, MS, neurosyphilis
oculogyric crisus
most common focal dystonia, abnormal head posture, irregular tremor “wry neck”
torticollis
broad term includes dystonia, chorea, athetosis and tremor, hyperkinetic
dyskinesia
inability to perform voluntary muscular movements, continuous movements of mouth, tongue, jaw, facial grimace, trunk sway, uncontrolled movements of arms, legs, fingers and toes
tardive dyskinesia
