Movement Anaylasisx Flashcards
What is Flexion ?
A decrease in the angle that occurs around a joint.
E.g. Knee, Elbow, Hip, Wrist, Spine
What is Extension ?
An increase in the angle that
occurs around a joint.
E.g. Knee, Elbow, Hip, Wrist , Spine
What is abduction ?
Movement occurring away from
the midline of the body.
E.g.Hip, Shoulder
What is Adduction ?
Movement occurring towards the
midline of the body.
E.g. Hip, Shoulder
What is Planter flexion ?
Bending the foot downwards away from the tibia (moving onto the balls of your feet !)
E.g. Ankle
What is Dorsi Flexion ?
Bending the foot upwards towards the tibia (occurs when in a normal standing position)
E.g. Ankle
What is Horizontal Flexion ?
A movement specific to the shoulder & hip where the angle between two bones decreases and on the horizontal plane.
E.g. Shoulder & Hip forward
What is Horizontal Extension ?
A movement specific to
the shoulder & hip joint where the angle between two bones increases and occurs on the horizontal plane.
E.g. Shoulder & Hip backwards
What is Rotation ?
Movement of a bone around it’s axis (remember this movement can be inward (medial) or outward (lateral).
E.g.Shoulder & Hip rotation in & out
What is Lateral Flexion ?
Bending sideways at the waist
E.g. Lumbar Vertebrae
What are the 3 planes of movement ?
•Sagittall plane
•Frontal Plane
•Transverse Plane
What movements occur in The Sagittal Plane ?
•Flexion & extension at the wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip & knee
•Dorsi-flexion & Plantar flexion at the ankle
What movements occur in The Frontal Plane ?
Abduction & adduction at the shoulder & hips
What movements occur in The Transverse Plane ?
•Horizontal flexion & extension at the shoulder at the shoulder & hip
•Medial/Lateral rotation at the shoulder
Example of the Sagittal Plane
•Football Kick
•Sprinter
•Forward Somersault
•Jump Shot
Sporting Examples: Up/down movemen
Example of the Frontal Plane ?
•Cartwheel
•Defensive Slide
Sporting Examples: sideways movements
Example of the Transverse Plane ?
•Ice Skaters Spin
•Rotational Shot Putt
•Forehand Tennis Shot
•Discus
Sporting Examples: Twisting/rotating movements ?
What are the 3 planes of movement ?
Frontal Axis
Transverse Axis
Longitudinal Axis
What is the Frontal Axis ?
Frontal Axis: A line that runs from the front through to the back of the body through the COM
What is the Transverse Axis ?
Transverse Axis: A line that runs from left to right side of the body through the COM.
What is the Longitudinal Axis ?
Longitudinal Axis: A line that runs straight down through the top of the head to the toes through the COM.
What Axis goes with which Plane ?
•Frontal Plane / Frontal Axis
•Sagittal Plane / Transverse Axis
•Transverse Plane / Longitudinal Axis
Planes and axis examples
● Forward Somersault
● Forehand Tennis Shot
● Jump Shot
● Rotational Discus
● Cartwheel
1.Transverse Axis/ Sagittal Plane
2.Longitudinal Axis/ Transverse Plane/
3.Transverse Axis/ Sagittal Plane
4.Longitudinal Axis/ Transverse Plane
5.Frontal Axis / Frontal Plane
What is Circumduction ?
The circular (or, more precisely, conical) movement of a body part, such as a ball-and-socket joint
What is Medial Rotation ?
The internal rotation of the limb towards the midline.
What is Lateral Rotation ?
The external rotation of the limb away from the midline.
What is Wrist Flexion ?
The action of bending your hand down at the wrist, so that your palm faces in toward your arm.
What is Wrist Extension ?
The raising the back of the hand towards the back of the forearm.
What is the Mid Line ?
An imaginary line down the centre of the body that divides the body into left and right.
