Movement Acrross Membranes Flashcards
Definition of diffusion
Particles move from a region of HIGH conc to LOW conc.
Particles diffuse down a concentration gradient.
True of gases and particles dissolved in solution.
Examples of diffusion
Gut - particles move from digested food products from GUT CAVITY to BLOOD in capillary
lungs- oxygen , from alveoli air spaces to blood circulating around lungs
Definition of osmosis
The movement of water from a less concentrated solution to more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
Examples of osmosis
Water into roots / plants making it turgid so can hold upright
Definition of active transport
Is the process by which dissolved molecules move accords a cell membrane from a lower to higher concentration .
Particles move against concentration gradient and require energy.
Examples of active transport
Carrier proteins pick up specific molecules, taken across concentration gradient.
