Movement Flashcards
There are 6 basic movements of the body that take place over 3 planes
Name the planes that movement take place in
- Coronal Plane - divided the body to front & back
+ adduction: moves extremities towards the midline
+ abduction: moves extremities away from the body - Saggital Plane - divides the body into R & L
+ flexion: usually moves extremity forward (except the knee)
+ extension: moves extremity backward (except the knee) - Transverse Plane - divided the body into upper & lower halves
+ internal rotation: medial rotation, towards midline
+ external rotation: lateral rotation, away from the midline
What is Complex movement and name the 2 types
It is when many joints move in various ways
- Coupling of Joints
- Open & Closed Chain Movement
Describe Coupling of Joints
Movement if adjacent joints in different planes
Ex: in Trikonasana, the vertebral column undergoes a complex series of coupled movements; rotation, flexion and extension
Describe Open Chain Movement
Chain movements in which distal (the insertion) end moves freely
Teaches balance and awareness of the body is space
Ex: deltoid abducting the upper arms in W2
Describe Closed Chain Movement
Chain movements in which distal (the insertion) end of the moving limb or body segment are fixed
Strengthens the core muscles
Ex: iliopsoas lowering the pelvis in W2
Name the movements of the Hip
- Flexion - raising the leg
- Extension - taking the leg back
- Abduction- moving leg away from midline
- Adduction - moving leg towards midline
- Internal Rotation - Garudasana
- External Rotation - Padmasana
Name the movements of the Pelvis
- Anterior tilt - forward; Uttanasana
- Posterior tilt - backward; Wheel
- Rotation - Garudasna
