Ligaments Flashcards
What are ligaments?
Fibrous connective tissue structures that LINK ONE BONE TO ANOTHER AT THE JOINT
Stabalizes the joints and allows mobility
Non-contractile but actively participates in movement bc they have sensory nerves that transmit information about joint position to the spinal cord and the brain
Describe the pelvic ligaments
Thick and strong in support of weight bearing function
Describe the hip ligaments
Shaped to stabilize the hip while allowing movement
Name the pelvic and hip ligaments
Sacroiliac
Sacrotuberous
Ischiofemoral
Iliofemoral
What do the iliofemoral ligaments do?
Stabilize the hip
Taunt when the femus extends and externally rotates
Tightness limits extension of hip in lunging poses and forward splits
Describe the ligaments of the shoulder
Glenohumeral ligaments are thin which allows for greater mobility
Describe the collateral ligaments
Limit side to side motion and maintain the joint as a hinge
Describe the spinal ligaments
Each vertebral unit is comprised of 2 adjacent vertebral bodies and the intervertebral disc
Movement possible in several planes
Combination of motion across multiple vertebral units culminates in spinal movement
Describe the trunk ligaments
Attach bone to bone and also attach certain muscles
What trunk ligaments connect the upper body Nd trunk to the lower body
Lines alba
Thoracolumbat fascia
Ilioinguinal ligament
What does the patellar tendon connect
Quads to tibia for extension
What do the collateral ligaments do
Limit side to side motion
What do the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments do
Limit anterior and posterior translation of the tibia on the femur
What do the menisci do
Deepen and stabilize the knee joint
What does the interosseous membrane do
Stabalizes bones of the lower leg
