Joints Flashcards
Main types and function
Ball & socket: greatest mobility
Hinge: greater stability; useful for propelling the body forward (knee)
Compressive: limited mobility but great stability; intervertebral joints
What is the joint capsule?
Connective tissue sheathing that surrounds and seals synovial joints
What is synovial tissue?
It lines the inside if the joint capsule and produces synovial fluid
What is synovial fluid?
A lubricant for the joint surface that decreases friction during joint movement
Circulates through the joint, transporting nutrients and carrying away debris
How does Yoga asana aid the synovial fluid?
Aids in flexion and expansion of the joint capsule which stimulates circulation of the synovial fluid
What is articular cartlidge?
It covers the joint surfaces which allows a smooth gliding of one bone over the other
One of the smoothest surfaces known to humankind
