Movement Flashcards
What is flexion ?
Decreases the angle between two bones or regions of the body.
What is Extention ?
Increases the angle between two bones or regions.
Can be specialized as hyperextension where the angle goes further than its normally defined range.
What is lateral Flexion ?
Side-bending of the body to the left or right.
What is Abduction
When a structure (usually a limb or part of one) is moved away from the midline.
This can be related to the midline of a limb also, e.g. in the case of abducting the fingers.
What is Adduction ?
When a structure (usually a limb or part of one) is moved towards the midline.
This can be related to the midline of a limb also, e.g. in the case of adducting the fingers.
What is Circumduction ?
An entire limb or part of a limb (wrist, finger, ankle, toe) moving in a circular/rotary pattern.
Combination of flexion, abduction, extension, and adduction in sequence.
What is Plantar Flexion ?
Straightening of the ankle – standing on tip toes or pointing toes.
What is Dorsiflexion?
Bending of the ankle – move toes to point upwards
What is inversion ?
Soles of the foot is turned in towards the midline.
A form of medial rotation.
What is Eversion ?
Sole of the foot is turned outwards.
A form of lateral rotation.
What is Protraction ?
Movement of a structure anteriorly – protrudes.
Most common in shoulder and jaw.
What is Retraction ?
Movement of a structure posteriorly (and medially in the case of the scapula).
Most common in shoulder and jaw.
What is elevation ?
Moved superiorly.
Most common in shoulder and jaw
What is Depression ?
Moved inferiorly.
Most common in shoulder and jaw.
What is pronation ?
Rotation of the forearm to cause the palm to face inferiorly/posteriorly.
Palm down position.
