Name a disadvantage about motte and bailey castles?
If the attackers were to fire a flaming arrow on to the castles then the castle would be burned down and caught on fire
What were they made of originally?
They were originally made of wood
How was the Motte formed?
A large amount of earth was dug up and raised into a mound. This mound was called the Motte. About 15metres higher
What was the keep?
The keep was a simple house with 2-3 rooms and was built on to of the Motte. It was the safest and highest part of the castles.
The keep would be surrounded by a wooden fence. What was the fence called?
The wooden fence was called a palisade
Where was the bailey?
The bailey was at the base of the Motte and it had many buildings.
What was contained in the bailey as well as homes, and who lived there?
Lord’s workers, soldiers and craftsmen lived there and there was stables and workshops also.
What was the bailey surrounded by like the Motte?
A palisade, a wooden fence.
Sometimes the motte and bailey can be surrounded by a ditch filled with water, what is its name for this?
A Moat
How did the drawbridge help the people?
It helped by protecting the people inside the bailey from attack and it also helped by letting people be able to cross the moat. It was guarded by Baron Soldiers.
One advantage of Motte and Bailey castles were….
…. They were cheap and quick to build.
How did the height of the motte help the soldiers?
It helped them by making them able to see if there was any attackers coming.
Another problem with the castles being made of wood is….
