Motor Control Flashcards
Proprioception
Feedback to the spinal cord from muscles receptors when in activity
Receptors charged with Proprioception, type of signal
Golgi tendon (tension) and muscle spindle (stretch and length)
Flaccid paralysis what is it
no reflexes below an injury
Controllers of the controllers: part 1 cortex (name and function)
SMA: internally generated movement
PMC: External stimuly
Where are Mirror Neurons?
in the Premotor cortex (PMC)
Controllers of the controllers: part 2 subcortex (name and function)
Cerebellum: excitatory learning to aim a violin at a moving cat while you dance to a waltz (skilled movements, motor learning, timing, aiming at a moving target)
Basal ganglia: inhibitory
Huntington’s disease symptoms and cause
Dance macabre, problems with concentration. Damage to the striatum (caudte nucleus + putamen) in the basal ganglia
Parkinson’s disease symptoms and cause
Hypokinesia and Bradikinesia= rigid and slow movements
Damage to the substantial nigra in the Basal Ganglia
Treatments to Parkinson’s disease
1- LDOPA: increases excitatory connections
2- Pallidotomy: decreases inhibitory connections
3 - Deep brain stimulation: a pacemaker for the basal ganglia, does the substantial nigra’s job (?)
