Refers to the factors that drive an employee to strive to achieve in the workplace
Why should employees be motivated
More productive = more effort in production therefore making less mistakes = decreasing costs, increasing quality, customer satisfaction, sales, and profit
Less likely to take days off and/or leave the organisation
What was Maslow’s motivation theory
States that once a particular need is satisfied it is no longer a motivator but that the lower-order needs must be satisfied before an individual can move to the next level ( sequential movement through need)s†
The Hierarchy of needs

Esteem needs
Social needs
Safety & Security needs
Physiological needs
›Physiological needs + def + identifying issues

What is Safety and Security, def, identifying issues
Def = Physically safe at work and sense of job security
Identifying needs X met = Organisation not abiding by OH&S laws, Employees not yet on ongoing/long term contracts, threat of redundancies/organisations closing

Pros and Cons of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs
Pros - There is a clear sequential structure and model for manager to follow
This provides.a clear framework to assisting developing strategies to motivate their employees
Motivation occurs quickly when employees move up the hierarchy
Con - Theory assumes all employees work through the sequential order of needs h/w this is not always true esp those driven by external motivators
Time consuming for manager to determine the level of each individual employee and then implement Strats in large business
What need is not met?
Ian, an environmental engineers ,was recently handed his first project to manage. He did this successfully. His manager is trying to work out how to ensure Ian is motivated moving forward
Self esteem needs, as self actualisation is intrinsic issue
After working at Mars in the supply chain management team for 3 years, Steve feels well connected in the organisation, power, his motivation is low
Self actualisation as the issue is intrinsic (motivation)
