Motivation In The Work Place Flashcards
What is the FW taylor- scientific management motivation theory?
He used time and motion studies to find the best way of doing things
- time taken by workers
- movements made by workers
Findings: if workers perform individual tasks precisely and with the right equipment they will therefore become more efficient
- people will be paid according to how many items they produce
- need breaks to counter fatigue
What are motivated stand more likely to do/be?
1) more likely to produce more goods and services
2) create a positive working environment and impression of the business with customers and other stakeholders
3) have less time off work through sickness
4) are less likely to change jobs
5) more forward thinking and have better ideas about their jobs and the future of the business generally
Douglas mcgregor- theory X and Y
What is theory X- people are made to work through the threat of punishment, person is directed to avoids responsibility. Unambitious and wants security
(Most managers do this theory and get poor results)
What is theory Y?
People will have self control and direction without the threat of ounisgment. Commitment to objectives will result in Rewards. Accept and often seek responsility, high imagination, better results in business. More motivates and happy
What theory should everyone use and why is it hard to implement?
Everyone should use theory Y, enables employees personal growth, creative freedom and a good working environment
Why is it hard to implement?
Tasks can be menial and need guidance
Many people do not like work so will not get things done if there is no fear of punishment
Abraham maslow- hierarchy of needs
People have different levels of needs, each need has to be addressed before the next level, if the lower levels are ignored we will all be unmotivated no matter how fulfilled our higher needs are
Describe the hierarchy of needs bottom to top
1) biological and physiological needs
2) safety needs
3) belonging ness and love needs
4) esteem needs
5) self actualisation
Frederick herzberg- hygiene factors
Similar to Maslow- different factors on different levels.
First level was hygiene factors- needed to survive (first levels of hierarchy of needs) they do not motivate because they are expected
What are some hygiene factors?
Working environment
Working relationships
Management
Salary
What are the motivation factors?
Achievement Recognition Work itself Responsibility Advancement
Summery of herzberg?
Hygiene factors and they are not motivators but are requires
Then there are other factors for motivations
Describe pay and non-pay incentives
Pay incentives are bonuses, commission and piece rates. All of these motivate someone to work harder so that they earn more money.
Non-pay incentives are things like self esteem, belonginess, community feel, generally happy in the work place
